What Makes A Funeral Catholic

A Catholic funeral is built around the Church's own liturgical rites rather than a flexible order of service. Three stages define it: the Vigil (wake), typically marked by nightly recitation of the Rosary; the Funeral Mass, celebrated by a priest according to the Roman Missal; and the Rite of Committal, which formally commends the deceased to God at the crematorium or graveside. Each stage has its own prescribed prayers and structure, which is what distinguishes a Catholic funeral most clearly from other Christian traditions' more flexible services.

Because the rite is specific, having a director experienced in Catholic practice matters. Knowing which prayers belong where, how the Mass should be structured around the casket's presence in the church, and how to coordinate with the parish office are all details that shape whether the day unfolds smoothly or with avoidable stress.

The Vigil: What To Expect

The Vigil, more commonly called the wake, usually runs one to three nights at a void deck, community hall, funeral parlour, or occasionally the parish hall itself. Family and friends visit to pay respects, sign a memory book, and offer condolences. Each evening typically includes a recitation of the Rosary, led by a family member, parish volunteer, or occasionally the priest himself, praying for the repose of the deceased's soul.

The Rosary during the Vigil is one of the most distinctly Catholic elements of the whole process, and many families find real comfort in its repetition each night. The Funeral Mass

The Funeral Mass, sometimes called a Requiem Mass, is usually celebrated at the family's home parish, though it can also be held at the wake venue in some cases. The Mass follows the Church's structure: an entrance procession (often with the casket brought in first), the Liturgy of the Word with Old Testament, New Testament and Gospel readings, the homily, the Liturgy of the Eucharist if Mass is celebrated in full, and the Final Commendation, where the priest blesses the casket with holy water and incense before it is taken for committal.

Because parish churches maintain their own Mass schedules, timing needs to be confirmed early. We liaise directly with the parish office to secure a slot that fits your family's timeline, and coordinate with the priest on any specific requests, hymns, readings, or the involvement of altar servers and a choir.

The Rosary, Readings & Eulogy

Beyond the nightly Rosary during the Vigil, families choose specific Scripture readings for the Funeral Mass from a set list appropriate to funerals. Common Old Testament choices include Wisdom 3:1-9, New Testament readings often draw from Romans 6 or 1 Corinthians 15, and Gospel readings are frequently taken from John 11 or John 14. Hymns such as "Be Not Afraid," "On Eagle's Wings" and "How Great Thou Art" are widely used, though your parish choir may have its own repertoire.

A eulogy is usually given after Communion or near the end of Mass, since the homily remains the priest's responsibility. Families often prepare a short tribute focused on a few clear memories, sometimes with more than one relative speaking. The Rite Of Committal

The Rite of Committal is the final, formal act of a Catholic funeral, commending the deceased to God's care at the crematorium or graveside. Most Catholic families in Singapore choose cremation, followed by placement of the ashes in a columbarium, often within the parish's own memorial garden where one exists. Burial remains available at Choa Chu Kang Cemetery's Catholic section for families who prefer it, subject to the standard plot allocation and 15-year tenure that applies across all public burial in Singapore.

Novena & Anniversary Masses

Catholic tradition doesn't end with the committal. Many families arrange a Novena, nine consecutive days of Masses or prayers offered for the deceased's soul, beginning shortly after the funeral. A Month's Mind Mass, held around one month after the passing, and an Anniversary Mass on the first year's anniversary, are also common ways families continue to honour their loved one within the Church's own calendar.
